How to block a program from updating using Windows XP firewall?

I want to stop the program from updating without my coscent but there is no option so I want to block it using Windows Firewall. I tried adding the program to excpetions and then unchecking but its not working. So does that mean Windows XP Firewall is trash? Even if I don't have it in exceptions still the program updates. Infact I cannot block any program from accessing the internet on Windows XP. I can do it easily on my Windows 7 Laptop using inbound and outbound connections on Windows 7 Firewall. But it doesn't seem to work on Windows XP because I can't find any other option. Please help
