Guitar Hero 3 help!?

im battling Tom Morello right now and im hittin way more notes then him but it gets to a certain part where i dont have nothing to play and hes on the other side playing alot of stuff and after that i get a "Death Drain" or whatever its called and he wins??? what am i doing wrong?
